[20080420] World Earth Day Meet (and a short ride)

Postby abhi » April 20th, 2008, 11:13 pm

It turned out more of a meet than a ride today. A lot of cyclists joined in to participate in the World Earth Day / Health Run initiative. Very happy to see that all those who made it took time out for a common cause, though cycling was not the main event! Thanks to all for coming and spending time. And of course to all those who helped spread the word!
After a lot of standing around and waiting, we were finally let to ride out of Kanteerava Stadium and the first thing that hit all of us was the fact that the traffic had been stopped for us and it was surreal experience to ride on Kasturba road without any traffic. Soon, a bunch of the cyclists broke away and were off racing :) the rest followed the path and returned to the stadium.
The riders were all led out of the stadium by an 85 year old Cyclist Mr. Shariff. He kept his own pace and Rushi and Nishad accompanied him till the finish of the ride.
After the ride, the oath taking ceremony was supposed to be held. But when I went in to speak with the organizers, I saw a bunch of women fighting over a second place finish for their kids. That was keeping the organizers really busy and looked like it would take up a lot of time and everyone was hungry too. So we just decided to head out to the nearest hotel for breakfast.
Here are a few snaps from the ride, enjoy!

Most of the morning involved standing around and chatting away.

Sure looks like a lot of people participated. One can only hope that the people who participated have learnt something about a more sustainable and environment friendly lifestyle and not treated it as a tamasha to keep their kids occupied during their school break. Of course, no such doubts about the bikeszone participants, your commitment is beyond doubt :)
