Racer Profile: Sabu Ishwar Ganegar

Postby abhi » March 10th, 2008, 5:35 pm

Sabu is our National Champion 2007 for MTB and thanks to Venkatesh a few of us were able to catch up with him. A very down to earth lad with very humble beginnings, we all here wish him all the very best in the future!

Name:
Sabu Ishwar Ganager

01.June.1989

Colnago

Favorite racing category:
Road Race

When did you start cycling?
2003, at the Bijapur Hostel.

What is the longest race you have done?
Bombay Stage race, 513 kms

How often do you ride?
I train six days a week, usually Monday to Saturday. Distances usually vary by day (60/80/120 etc)

What is your favorite cycling route?
Currently it’s the route between Bijapur and Jamkhandi. Previously it was between Bijapur and Atni.

What do you do when you are off the bike?

My free time is split between visiting my parents and my work as a Ticket Collector in the South Western Railways.

Are you involved in any other sport?
Running, Weight Training, Swimming

Lance Armstrong

2008 Indian Camp for Asian Cycling Championship and also other tours that I may participate.

What was your biggest victory?
1. The first one was in Kurukshetra Road Nationals where I secured 2nd position. It was memorable because I participated in the ‘Under 19’ age group. I was not allowed an entry in the ‘Under 17’ age group, my actual age group because of some issues. So I took this as a challenge, competed in a higher age group and won!

3. The third is Pondicherry to Chennai where I won 2 Gold Medals in MTB National Championship.

Who has helped you with sponsorships etc. ?
MB Patil (MLA) sponsored a road bike worth about 2 Lakh rupees.
DCC Bank sponsored a CSK Track bike worth about 1 Lakh rupees.

Coach
Vijay Singh Rajput
Sabu on the Kona which he took to victory in the championship this year.

Abhi : thanks for posting this.

It would be good to know if the railways sponsors his biking endeavours to any degree. Maybe Venkatesh can answer this and write about his team too? The sport won't become any bigger without some publicity...

Great rider, humble guy !!

Likes to ride more than talk !!

Wish him all the very best for a wonderfull future.

Shree: No railways does not sponser him. Right sabu?? But for sure Railways has offered him employment, which is great, infact its the only govt/public sector which still has openings for sports people. All others have shut the doors for sports persons.

Sponsorship for a sport is definitely tied to the visibility of the sport. We don't even get newspaper coverage for cycling events!

Publishing is becoming personal now-a-days (courtesy mechanisms like blogs) - and that's a good way to build a following I feel. Will folks like Venkatesh be willing to write/contribute to a blog site OR something similar ?

PS :The ICR 2008 results at http://schoolsforindia.org/ICR/2008/res ... atuer.html throws some light at who is being sponsored & who is not. Sabu's state is "Karnataka", so Old Man is right - he doesn't have sponsorship for racing.

There have been instances in the past where a MLA and a bank have sponsored his race bikes. I've updated the first post with details of that and his coach there. I seemed to have missed that out from my notes earlier.

I agree with you Shree that its guys like this who need a lot of publicity to help them grow in the sport. He is a TC in the SW Railways, but does not need to go to work mostly and can practice. Railways has a strong base this way and most other govt. orgs are out of this trend already.

Shree: Here's the twister:

Employees of railways are generally not allowed to represent the state, as there is a posibility of them doing better than the railway representing team, so if you are not qualified to be in the team, they sit through the race and no entry.

Railways surely dont want their own men representing the state beat the official railway entry and the credit not going to them.

I also understand from sabu that the railway championship is tougher than the national championship.

Wish Sabu loads of luck...

Wonder is some of the larger Pvt cos/MNCs would be interested in sponsoring folks - After all quite a large number of pvt cos sponsor teams in Tour De France.

But then there are no Dhonis or Symonds or Harbhajans or Tendulkars here. Heck not even Ishant Sharma!

Good wishes and prayers for Sabu and his likes who are sportsmen/women (and not cricketers).

Sabu,Indeed a very good achievement,

Bikezone members should help in creating funds for this type of Achievers.

People like Sabu should have a better coverage in the Media for the sponsors to notice.(Something which all sports need these days except cricket).

Venkatesh correct me if I am wrong.

Sabu won 3rd place at the cycling competition in Russia.

He also won the Cyclothon here in Blore.

True, typically a biker will peak at 28-30, time is with him. He just needs to get more international exposure and training!
