Gautam, you've outdone yourself. May I suggest making this bright red, making it mandatory reading, and a quiz on this before they're allowed to sign up?

Might want to put a link to the What Bike FAQ in the original article, if only to give people one more chance to redeem themselves.

YES! (You're sorry you asked now, huh?)

rohan_kini wrote:Another really interesting read on similar lines - http://www.craigslist.org/about/best/se ... 50038.html

Haha, yeah I remember that one!

But the other stuff aside, I was actually serious about recommending specific bikes, because it seems to be what people want to hear. So many people don't want leads to possible bikes, but a clear "Buy the Rockrider 5.1 in size M."

I think those are safe buys because they're easy to sell/easy to put to other uses and also not too specialised in form, so a good way to know for sure whether this whole biking thing is for you.

:)

About the recommendations - you should definitely try it and see if you are any more successful.

IMO folks generally want to get themselves into a confused state. I seem to be meeting and talking to folks who are utterly confused with all the recommendations on the net.

The single bike recommendation is a good idea - in isolation. They will take your recommendation, then dig around more and get more recommendations and then read blog picture/spec posts of newbie-ala-experts and get swayed by the elaborate poetry that is written about the latest acquisitions.

Finally a free stand too.

Think Trek and Lance have still not gotten over a query from here about how to attach a side stand to the Remedy 66 :) Lol. Remembered it with the side stand.

^^ For real? Someone emailed Trek asking about attaching a stand to a remedy? Did they also ask about putting racks on a Madone 6.9?

Straight bar, cheap alloy cages and Zipps? Platforms with toe clips, and a cable lock?

Having said all that, I read somewhere that the guy rides a fair amount, as per the LBS which changes his tyres rather frequently.

When I bought my Trek 1.5 from BOTS, I am ashamed to say that I had asked Rohan about a kick stand.

Even in your cycling infancy, your tendency to the Dark Side was making itself known, eh? A kick stand on a 1.5 is a lot less egregious than the horrors you've inflicted on that poor CAAD9.

If I ever go to Bangalore again, I'm going to take a wicker basket for Doctor D. It will be useful to hang on front of his new carbon frame for his grocery runs.

Minkey,

You're getting yourself an evening of beers from me whenever you land up in Delhi next. This is EPIC.

I've been on 10+ forums - not one forum till date has bothered to cut down on the repetitive newbie queries. Spoonfeeding newbies is religion - telling newbies to use the search function & do their homework seems anathema in most places!!

and I thought I'd done a fair bit when I set up my FAQ http://freerider.in/drupal/General/Cycling-Gyan :)
