ACT 110+ - broken seat base

Postby are123 » October 29th, 2010, 6:35 pm

hi ,
i bought ACT 110+ 3 months back , using it regurlarly @ 10 km a day.
today i saw a crack welding that connects seat to the frame [ not sure what to term it].

Did anybody face such problem before ??
can this be covered in warranty ?
will get it checked @ dealer tomorrow. per initial talks he says , this cannot be covered. need to take cycle to the showroom for confirmation.

attaching pic where the welding is gone .

It's not very clear, but from what I see, that should be covered under warranty. Don't let your dealer take the easy way out. What's the point of a warranty if manufacturing defects like these aren't covered?

Extremely dangerous location for a sudden failure. That's however besides the point - It has to be covered.

That is bad :( Sorry to hear.

I am sure you will get a positive and quick response from TI cycles. My experience so far is very good.
Call/meet your dealer and report it. Whatever his answer, call TI and tell them too. They will take it seriously.

good thing that you at least detected it in time... i was reading some other thread where the poor fellow crashed due to the sudden breaking of the frame.. that was an ACT 105/ 106 i thing. anyhow, get them good - raise enough stink for the senior guy in the corner office to take notice :)

not so long ago ACT 110 was being touted as the best entry-level hybrid around with lotza great reviews. now i see this and other threads about a rusting handlebar, broken spoke and chain. and i also think the number of people offering their ACTs for sale has increased here and on BBC. wonder what's happening with the bikes

^^^ It's still the best VFM at the "entry-level". Consider the competition in it's price-range - LA Navigator(dirty golden color!), crappier-looking FF Roadrunner and totally sub-standard 6-speed Mach-19.

What about the Schwinn Sporterra at 13?

Unless you're really really heavy or are loading granite sinks on your bike, this shouldn't happen with any kind of positioning. Don't let the dealer find a way to pin it on you.

It will be best to escalate this issue with TI cycles so that they can do something about it. A weak weld is a serious issue.
I doubt whether dealer will share your pain. Btw, which dealer is that?

On another note being the preferred entry level bike i am sure number of ACT110 owners is greater than owners
of any other hybrid in the same range (I may be wrong, please correct me) so number of issues is bound to be greater.
It will be alarming when all us ACT owners start facing common issues. Anyways, I will be cautious sitting on mine now.
Does any one know of a tell tale sign of a weak weld ?

On the whole i always feel once we have purchased something in India we are pretty much on our own.
These sellers will make us run so many times that we eventually give-in.

What about the Schwinn Sporterra at 13?

I submit that with 5 options around/under 10k, Schwinn is no longer competing at the "entry-level" in that segment. 10k is a soft-barrier for Indian psychology. Case in point: fresh!!!

This is a major quality issue. I've reported to TI-Cycles after I had similar problem 2 weeks back. The seat post was replaced by them.
If your seat clamp was fixed in reverse way initially, then this is a potential candidate for the crack to occur.

I'm not sure if the poor dealer can do any bit here. Contacting the customer care with enough evidence would be helpful.

Hope you get this fixed early.

TI people are responsive to such complaints. But, "TI ke ghar mein der haibohot, bohot, bohot der hain. Par andher nahin" I will be loading a story in a weeks time in same context.

Guys, thanks for the responses.
sorry guys couldn't get a cam to take a good pic.

Update: Dealer after checking the bike initially said , seat base is gone and has to be replaced and warranty is only from frame and seat base is not covered under any guarantee. On asking him to check with customer center , dealer spoke to herculus Area sales manager . per his response, as the damage is a welding crack ,this can be covered. And the part needs to be checked with company representatives.

current status :
left the bike with dealer ( though he offered me a temporary replacement of a seat) so that part can be checked and replaced.

next update on tuesday as the dealer is closed on Mondays.
Donot want to take dealer name as of now. will give those details after the issue is fixed.

For now felt support/service is good and fairly simple .

i'm sure TI will respond positively to such complaints. they are expanding their range in a big way and would like to be in their customer's good books. they are marketing GT and Mongoose bikes in India now --> Linky

Launching the models here, D. Raghuram, division president, told reporters: 'The first half sales of premium cycles this year has crossed the annual sales made last year.'

Wow! How cool is that?

true. there's a new BSA Go showroom at Rajajinagar (17th cross and Rajkumar Road junction. used to be Aditya Automation Kinetic Honda showroom). will drop in a take a looksy but going by that article,
The GT range of cycles are priced between Rs.17,000 and Rs.27,000. The Mongoose range is sold at Rs.10,000 to Rs.25,000.

i guess they are only selling their entry-level and lower mid-range models
