Chains and rust

Postby deepakvrao » July 22nd, 2012, 9:26 pm

I think lots of you would know that I have been having issues with rust on my chain [and the bottle cage bolt too :( ].

We have 7 bikes, all stored in the same room, and ONLY my road bike has this issue. Wife's bikes as well as my other bikes, which don't see so much sweat have no issues. My Surly has the same chain now for 2 years and 6000km and no issues. That's why I'm convinced that it is the sweat.

Wife's chains last a year, while mine rust in a couple of months, and sometimes as early as one month.

So, after a lot of research I found that Wippermann makes stainless chains. Just ordered one, and will give feedback on this thread. Putting it out here in case anyone else has also been having such issues.

They have another one which is 50 pounds plus, but I think that is really steep for a chain. If this lasts me double my regular chain and/or requires less maintainance, the money will have been well spent. Good reviews, and the Connex removable link has great reviews too.

Doc .. Let me know how these go....

My SRAM Force Chain ... has not rusted in the last 18 months of ownership ... i ride a lot less ..and only a couple of times in rain.

For the bottle cage bolts... just go for alloy or titanium bolts. What about your stem bolts ? no rust ?

Don't know if you guys have noticed
There is one screw on the frame under the botton bracket for cable guide which gets rusted as well
But the good thing about that screw is that it has a rubber padding, this too needs replacement

Doc Can you post a pic for your rusted chain? Yes mine also rusts but very little! Infact My Surly chain has seen almost 5k kms in all kinds of weather yet just has very little rust.
People will assume you're saving the planet and/or riding for a cause even if all you want to do is enjoy riding

It could be the alcohol that the doc allegedly uses to clean the chains.
