HELP! Unidentifed part in rear hub.

After hearing a rattle in my road bike's rear hub for a few days I finally took it to the LBS and the guy pulled this part out and sent me on my way.



The bike seems fine and the rattle is gone but I'm sure this part isn't just something the manufacturer put in for laughs. Also I don't really trust the guy but there aren't a lot of good bike shops where I live.

Anyone who knows what this part is, please let me know and tell me what I ought to do now.

Did he pull it out from INSIDE of the hub ?

to me, it looks like one of two possibilities :

this is the kind of bolt used to fix the chainrings to the crank
or, such bolts are used to fix the caliper brakes to the frame.

But, I cannot fathom what it would be doing inside a hub.

It was inside the hub. So, you're saying the manufacturers did put it in for laughs?

I don't see any fasteners/bolts like the one you got in this document

Looks like an end cap to "something" while allowing "something" project out.

I may sound demanding but believe me... only curious... can you help us visualize how it was inside the hub.... Not getting any sense of scale too.

It went along the axis of the hub, with the QR skewer through it. Where exactly it was, I can't tell. That's what I'd like to find out actually.

just wondering, maybe this was used as a spacer? in any case, it doesn't look like a proper spacer ! probably the person assembling the hub ran out of it and pulled this thingamajig lying on the floor !
just like anool has said, it looks like a chainring bolt. weird !

Not trying to help here, but I have heard of Detroit cars from the 70's with rattling noises inside a door. With the lining removed, it revealed a beer can - probably left inside by a worker assembling the car.

looks like one of those things from a V brake

off to check diagrams and see if that notion is right

I distinctly remember something like this from when the brakes on the wife's Q5 were not working (would not spring back) and i had taken the brakes apart.

I have seen a similar looking part in my motorcycles rear tire.
This is the last part in the tire. After this is a small cylinder about an inch long. Then the frame. After this the axle bolts head.

I always assumed this part was there to provide a smooth even surface. So that that cylinder gave balanced pressure to the wheel.

Thanks. Seems like it isn't non-essential then. I'm going to take it to a better bike shop and see if they can put it back in.
