Do your research - esp. if you are spending 50k+ Rs.

Don't assume Trek or Cannondale are better by default and vice versa. I have owned Trek and Cannondale in the past and currently also have a Giant Warp DS2 [6 years old] - yes they are solid brands but look deeper into what components are on it.

Today I bought a Rockrider 8.2 from decathlon after looking at Trek [6k/8k] and Cannondale mainly because of availability and value for money. The premium on cannondale was absurd - 2010 flash f3 has a price tag of 1.1 Lakh [that is 800 $ over MRP for last year's model] and has brakes two generations older than what is on RR 8.2 which is less than half its price. It has comparable drive train [derailers etc.], no option to put two water bottles etc. Yes has a unique frame [Made in the US] and looks classy and the front single sided fork is very innovative...

I would still buy a trek or a cannondale instead of RR if they did not carry that kind of premium and was available to test ride or to see...

I am not saying RR 8.2 is a great bike since I have not had a chance to ride it [just test rides] - will post a more detailed report after a few 100 kms. The Giant is a rock solid bike - heavy but I can thrash it around and not worry..

is it okay to copy-paste a post without attribution to the original author ?

http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/bicycles/10890-how-select-bike-according-your-needs-budget.html

and then linked here too :

http://cyclists.in/forum/topics/nice-article-on-how-to-select

The very least I would do is to mention the OP's name/link.

Thanks. Your post has helped a lot in removing many doubts regarding which bike to buy. (Still many more remain though before I zero in on one).

Check the monetary benefit attached to it,

I used to spend Rs.5000 a month for office commuting. My investment on bike+accessories is returned in less than 5 months

Note, this is relative calculation based on your other mode of transport :)

POSTING FOR THE FIRST TIME?
I'm guessing this is the best place to catch first-time BZ contributors.

As the forum gets bigger, spammers are trying harder, and it's sometimes hard to know whether a post is legit or not. I strongly recommend introducing yourself in the 'New Members' section. If not, at least put enough detail in your post so we know you're not trying to gain entry just to sell us big bright green pleasure machines or the like.

For example:
I had back pain too. But I did some stretches and felt better.

is exactly the kind of post spammers make. It's on-topic, but there are no specifics. Many first-timers jump in with posts like that. Sometimes, the name is a clue, but there are more and more posts from new people that are indistinguishable from spammy ones. Throw in some background so your comments are not disapproved.

Thanks!

What's a bright green pleasure machine? You have one for sale? If so, what price and conditions? Can I see photos?

(And about that FAQ cleanup...?)
