great post minkey ! congrats on the 10k mark ! i liked all of what you typed, but i liked this more " It's okay if this group seems like a bunch of fanatics . Passion is important, and passion for the right things is increasingly rare. We live in a world full of people who are passionate about cell phones, laptops, cars, TV shows and IPL. For God's sake give me someone who can talk about pedals and headsets all day."

i fit the bill. i cant talk anything besides pedals, headsets, frames et al !!!we should meet up !! IPL? whats that?

Hello MC,
Read this post for the first time and felt great
You have lterally poured everything that a cyclist goes through from the beginning
Very nicely written and loved reading it
On the same note, I complete 3 years of cycling, donno how many kilometers I have done though

Loved it. Even with the very little knowledge and experience I've got, I can relate to most of the points.

This is a really good read MC. It has just the right tone, not preachy and not patronising. Often, the worst thing about getting into a club is dealing with all the hardcore enthusiasts (i'm looking at you rabid Apple fanbois) It's nice to read a piece about a subject, written by someone who is passionate about it but isn't an unbearable ass.

I have wanted to write about what cycling has meant to me in the last year or so but I doubt I would manage anything near the eloquence of your writing.

Yeah, Minkey Chief is one of my favourite writers around here. In fact, surprising number of people with good writing skills here.

And, you're not too bad yourself either, SexJihaad9/11. I remember someone from here forwarding me your blog. Good stuff...

Thanks for bumping this post. It was a nice one to re read. Curious though, what does it have to do with Apple fanboys?

Wow, thanks for all the great feedback. I don't think I'm going to be quite as emotional about hitting 20,000 (which may have already happened, we'll see once I post my touring miles).

Wow. This leaped off the page at me. I've been cycling with any seriousness for just a couple of years myself, and your 'mixed-up, contradictory thoughts' are anything but. Counter-intuitive, maybe, if you're not a cyclist. What you said about the diminishing marginal utility of gear is exactly how I approach the question as well. Clipless pedals changed my riding - and I owe thanks to the Guad, whom I pestered for quick answers. Minkey, your blogs on cycling (duttiwater springs to mind , as well as the one on commuting in Bangalore) I circulated to my friends who ride. Lots of grins and nods at how we ride because we can stay in motion, and carrying deo and a change of clothes.

I'm aware that this is in danger of degenerating into an inarticulate ramble of thanks and acknowledgement, so will stop here. Thanks for saying, with grace and style, what most of us want to.

It's hard not to be jealous of runners. There's so much beauty and simplicity in that sport, and the equipment is so easy to travel with.

I haven't started cycling yet, but I can assure you on running Sir that things which look beautiful and simple on the front have a hard and ugly training behind.
Usain Bolt says that he can run that 100m with same time everyday if they host Olympics everyday, but what he is afraid of is the training which makes him puke each time he leaves the track.

From my personal experience of running, those few grams of shoes can be heavy too.
But cheers up for the bike world.. Can't wait to get a cycle :D let me check the difference too..
