Postby thechalicecups » April 30th, 2012, 12:02 pm

Hi,

Does anybody know of an orthopedic doctor in Bangalore who is a cyclist himself ? I want to consult regarding my knee pain..the Apollo doctor doesn't treat in the light of cycling and throws gen painkillers every time .

Thanks.

i had consulted Dr Hemant Kalyan. He consults in Manipal (ortho and sports medicine dept) on wednesdays and fridays. He can also be consulted in his private clinic called ossicare. google for the same. he specializes in sports injuries

I had seen him a month and half back for knee pain which developed while i was away in the UK.

MRI and primus muscle imbalance test revealed chondromalacia (low grade) of knee cap. just got done with initial therapy that the doc prescribed (involved 12 sessions of quadriceps strengthening specifically the VMO muscle and end leg extension training).

got to visit him for the review this week post the initial therapy.

the pain is now only say 5-10 percent of what it was at its peak before i started therapy(infact did some rigorous exercises which inclided climbing lots of steps in last 2 sessions of therapy). and the physio says its a great progress too though this is only the begining and the weight training for legs need to continue.

hoping that doc will give a green signal to get back to cycling when i visit him for post therapy review this week.

Hi There,
Are these daily sessions that you underwent? Any medication that was prescribed?
I too have been detected with mild chondromalacia but given some suppliments and no physio and have been asked another visit to the Doc after a month. I have been resting for a month now, not sure how soon I can resume cycling. :( (BikesZone is the only place when you are off saddle)

based on doc's prescription, physio planned total of 12 sessions. 3 sessions a week. so it took a month in total. each session lasted around 40 mins. they concentrated on some specific quadriceps muscles. doc had asked me to start the quad strengthening the very next day after diagnosis from MRI(irrespective of pain as these would be pretty light to start with). He said that the idea is that the initial sessions should be under professional supervision and strengthening should continue post these 12 sessions too, albeit can be done by myself in a local gym once the specific exercises are figured out.

he had also prescribed 'supplements' - Rejoint (glucosamine + chondrotin) for 4-5 months but he said these were secondary and the root cause addressal is quad strengtehening.

I guess medical advise varies depending on ones condition and should probably be left to medical professionals to determine whats best for us. we just need to consult some one who we have confidence in.

Thanks.

Any recommendations that the forum has on sports doctors in Delhi? I went to one with knee complaints quite similar to the ones listed here. He was sadly quite perfunctory in his examination and just redirected me to his in-house physio clinic and chondroitin supplements. Out of pocket for 6K and still not much improvement on the knee

Thanks dear, yes the supplements are glucosamine and calcium, and yes he has advised me to take walk, may be in my second visit he will advise more exercises. Lets see how it goes, the pain is not much, but its there, which is bugging.
This is only in left knee, the right knee is absolutely fine, that is strange.

Pune BZers, any sports physiotherapist you may suggest?

You might as well save money rather than spend on treatment that is totally unproven in this setting- namely the supplements.

Dr bharatinder singh - http://www.maxhealthcare.in/services_fa ... sheel.html

bit costlier in consultation, but fervent believer in exercise. Limited initial physio for symptomatic pain relief, and then a solid exercise regimen. no enzymes, no vitamins, nothing.

Does anybody of a place in Bangalore with reasonable MRI costs?
Prices quoted to me are between 7-8k and they all stink all of kickback arrangement with doctors..

But if you can't find any better deal, I will suggest don't think too much into it. Get over and done with it.
At this time your mind needs to feel as much relaxed as possible to concentrate on the healing process.

@nautanki- I know its a meniscus or a cartilage tear ( pain on putting weight on foot. i.e walking/standing)..but when I wear a crape bandage I don't feel much pain..so its most probably a cartilage tear but need an MRI done so doc can make a qualified diagnosis...wish I was in Mumbai..it costs around 1.5k in KEM with 10-15 days waiting..

@crptic - cool man..wish docs would also give money back on wrong diagnosis..
