KHS Alite 150 - A review

Postby mynk » March 17th, 2011, 11:47 am

Hi,

I got the bike from Venky for a fortnight or so...

Image

First impressions - An entry level bike that looks cool (Ferrari Red) and you get disc brakes at 15K (discounted price from 16K).

Price - The bike at Wheelsports is priced 16K and you are getting it currently at a discounted price of 15K
Dealer - Wheelsports
Website - http://wheelsports.in/

Time - A lot of bikes in stock if regular size
Service - Excellent

Product
USP - A good entry level bike at a good price
Specs - http://www.khsbicycles.com/04_alite_150_11.htm
Pros - Good pricing, decent frame and survived quite a lot of abuse
Cons - The discs can get noisy at times.

Other Reviews - http://www.mtbr.com/cat/bikes/xc-hardta ... 27crx.aspx

How does it compare with -
Trek 3700/3500 - Similar components only shifters are microshift and I am not sure how good/bad they are. Discs in 150 are a plus
Trek 7100 - If you want to use for city riding you can consider it over the 7100 if you replaced the tires with slicks or those that taker higher PSI
Merida Sub 10 - Again similar components slightly better. KHS is value for money.
Rockrider 5.2 - Similar price range - you are getting better components
Giant Upland - I like Giant but the handle bar is better in the other bikes in this range and you get varying sizes.

My experience
Loved it instantly - I tried it for a fortnight. Looks awesome with the Ferrari red color and strokes of white. Basic suspension but survived bad roads and bunny hops over bad speed breakers. I had issues with shifting gears 2-3 and 2-4 slipped but that would be a tuning issue I guess. My rear wheel got slight loose as the quick release wasn't tight enough and it make sound while riding which is annoying till I fixed it. I like the platform pedals unlike the metal pedals you usually get in this range. All in all the bike is very good for the price. A colleague had a weird issue with the fork the very next day - the cap of the shocker popped off but Naveen at Wheelsports replaced the defected fork (the threading was not right). So your bike will be in good hands! :)

Bottom Line
Go for it unless you can stretch your budget in the 20-25K range. Excellent bike to start with. Will survive most trails and will do well for office commute.

Crisp review there...

About the discs: How many kms has the bike done? The noise might be either a run in or a tuning issue imho..

How is the saddle? Wanna replace my almost shred to pieces rockrider 5.2 saddle ... I'll talk to naveen/venky this saturday I guess..

EDIT : Bike looks sexy in red!!!

Congralations on your red cherry...

Sorry for the delayed response - I did not get email notifications for the comments. I am not very familiar with bikeszone yet...

I don't have so much of a preference for the saddles yet. I found it fine. Probably on a longer ride it would make a difference but I just did city commute.

I haven't bought this bike. Just took it for trials and got some friends to buy it. I am contemplating between alite 1000 & 2000

> the bike looks really nice man.. did you ride it like really hard.. beating the s**t out of it types?

Not really but yes the bike did survive loadsa pot holes, bunny hopes, broken foot path rides. That's when the quick release problem showed up! :)

> I don't think he "bought" it did you mayank?, either way, congrats on getting it for a review.

Thanks for pointing it out Shankar. I am planning to check out a few bikes this week for myself. Let's see.

Was going through ICN and came across some used ones for sale

http://cyclists.in/profiles/blogs/khs-b ... -sale-4-no

Wonder why they are selling it though after barely using them for 7 months?

Good deal or not , I do not know...

You can get this from Wheelsports.in (http://wheelsports.in/) ... AFAIK Wheelsports is sole KHS dealers in Blore.

Went to Wheelsports few days back, got to know they are out of Alite 150 stock .. was told that it will take few days to get new stock ...
And also got to know that they are no longer importing merida and gaint brand bikes ... does anyone know why ?

All in all, KHS Alite 150 is good VFM bike.

Regards,
Vivek ^_^

AFAIK Venky @ wheel sports imports it. We get KHS Bike in Chennai, but it gets to Chennai thru Venky, Always better to by from Venky, you get better deal.
May be thats the case of BoTS and other Bangalore dealers as well.

Wont hurt to check price at multiple shops before you make the buy.
