My Experience with Hero Hawk single speed

Postby amaath » July 23rd, 2012, 12:20 pm

Hello,
After school days, I got back to cycling 3 months back and have ridden my Hero Hawk for 1000+ kilometers.
I'm no professional cyclist and would like to share my review about this cycle.

What you'll like:
1) Price
2) Accessories list (includes mud guards, rack. The cycle pump is useless though)
3) Thin tires
4) Cheap to maintain
5) Relatively robust
6) Can literally fly on down slopes :D

What you won't:
1) Braking
2) The height may not suit everybody

My Experience:
I started getting knee pains when jogging that forced me to take up cycling after a long time. It was initially a shock to me after seeing the prices, as my expectation for a cycle was around 1500 INR  . Since my plan was to commute to office and nearby shops, I preferred a road bike. I had a dilemma between BSA MACH 3 and Hero HAWK nu-age and finalized the latter after checking out some reviews online.

I bike almost daily to office that comprises around 22 KM to and fro. I've removed the extra handle bar for resting the elbows for weight reduction. The mud guards and rack are still there. First service was done after 100 KM that costed 250 bucks. Later, the front brake pads were changed to bigger ones as the stock ones completely wore off within 200 KM of riding. Got a pump as I have to fill air every 3 days, thanks to thinner tyres.

The chain has loosened a bit and I'd be rectifying it in my next service which would be after 500 KM.

On the whole, this is a reliable one and I'm very satisfied with the buy. Pl let me know if I've missed anything and I'll be happy to answer you.

Thanks!

250 bucks for first service? Dude, you should have gotten it free or it shouldn't have cost this much for hawk.

I went to a different shop for servicing, else it would have been free :)

Hi Amaath,
Hawk needs a little tweaking every now and then.
I bought a used hawk (1.5 Years old) and I paid 80 Rs for its service. The guy in the shop did a very nice service. I am happy with that. I some times get little pain in my feet when i go for rides like 40km. I think i need to replace the pedals and the seat tube.
Ultimately its a pretty decent bike

happy riding
Krishna

Hero Hawk SS is my commute and daily shopping Bike too. I have replaced the handlebar and chain ring to a lighter one (purchased from Metro Cycles, Kalbadevi, Mumbai). The seat was replaced with a Fomas seat. I can lock it on the road and shop without worrying about its security.

Yes the brakes are crap and need to adjust the tension very often and change the brake pads as well.

Hi Krishna,
I faced minor joint pain when I started as well, but later it went off! May be, I got used to it ;)

Thanks,
Amarnath

I'm tired of adjusting the tension every 2 weeks, and today, the rear brake wire got cut..
I feel I can travel faster with better brakes.
Any upgrade options are available, please?

I have upgraded the wheelset (700cx 23c), crank, pedal, sproket, chain and brakes. Feels much better as of now.
I'll upload the pics soon!

I suppose you have alloy rims now? That would make a whole lot of difference in rolling weight and braking efficiency.

Along with the pics , If you could also tell us where you sourced the parts and roughly what it costed , it would be helpful for ppl like me who are planning similar modifications .Based on some of the other threads Metro Cycles, Kalbadevi , Mumbai seems to be a very good place to procure parts . Anything similar in Bangalore?, I know we have good LBS like wheelsports and BOTS but any other place where we can source such parts ?

not sure dude. I'm yet to get the specs from BOTS. I'll let you know once I get the list from them.

Ravi, I got this done from BOTS. They had sourced all the parts themselves.
