What I am curious about is this. So many of you people feel so very strongly about killing stray dogs, that you go on and on for days spending your time voicing your opinion on this forum. If you saved up that time and sent a complaint to the civic authorities, perhaps you would be contributing to this "menace"?

pdg, after repeated complaints to the vanishing breed of civic authorities nothing concrete has happened so far. The strays are still a menace in my apartment building. :?

How much ever we discuss this topic, we all know that at end of the day nothing is going to happen. No amount of campaign will teach Indians not to spit or litter on the road. So these dogs are not going anywhere. I am not against dogs but I will surely not let the aggressive one get away next time. People will continue to feed strays and it is not going to end. People will get chased or barked at whether they are walking, running, driving, cycling.........

this debate will go on...now let us all get back on the saddle.

I realised that anything I said here sounded mean, so I deleted it. Bubbu, how are your hamstrings now? You need to start riding. Fast.

Actually I'm sorry. I guess it was mean anyway! Was just wondering what you thought Crypt meant when he said 'canid'.

About the hamstrings, I guess you should have recovered from any running injuries by now--even if it somehow involved the nerves? Stress from work and lack of sleep can manifest in all kinds of strange ways--do you feel better when works eases off or does it never ease off?

Yeah, like i once posted - even khaleel bought a cycle.
and lived happily ever after.

Time for a happy ending to your bike plans as well now man.

You can't be that ill for that long to not ride a cycle recreationally even if on an intermittent basis?

Though I haven't got too involved in the discussion, I've been thinking about this a lot over the last few days. My wife runs regularly and has plans of going running with our dogs. Her big worry is badly behaved male humans, but I was just thinking about what we'd do if a pack of dogs went for them. Forget about attacking her, even if they just attacked our dogs, it would be really horrible.

What are my options? For all my talk of getting angry with the Corporation or whatever, Shankar is right--get real. My dad has spent most of his life getting angry with then-KEB and now BESCOM... it hasn't stopped the power cuts. Realistically, what can we do?

1) Wife arms herself with stick/spray from the get-go, and hopes that aggression once will keep them at bay. (Dangerous and maybe actually provoke greater aggression from the pack.)
2) Wife arms herself with Parle G/Glenands biscuits and befriends the pack. (Dangerous in the long-term, especially for children with food. Might work for human, but they are unlikely to accept our dogs.)
3) We hound an agency till they do something. (Which one? Some of these dogs are actually pets of the villagers, or at least suddenly become pets when the truck comes round.)
4) I invest in a dog-catching pole and crate, and go and grab them myself, taking them one by one to CUPA or whatever. (Hard work, potentially dangerous, and pets point from earlier.)

As difficult (and perhaps foolish) as (4) will be, I like the idea of shutting up and just doing something, without whining about the nature of dogs, government and the Third World.

Any other options that don't involve rocks and crushed skulls?

That would work for isolated strays. I'd imagine that a pack would let one, at the most two, members disappear before they never enter that cage no matter what delicacy was inside? Not sure. If it's done without drama and stress, it may be repeatable.

I'm ready to apply Rupee to oral cavity and buy one of these. Who wants to form a dog-catching group of cyclists? We could put wheels on that cage.

MC sir

I don't see a single dog walker without a nice stick, to intimidate and if necessary thrash the daylights out of other dogs should they get into a fight or whatever I assume.

A all too often sight from my fifth floor next to PC wala window - five in the morning (and evening), thwacking and barking and growling and shouting sounds, followed shortly by neighbor doing a headlong dive into one of the "independent houses" further along the road because this large white tubby lab she is walking is beseiged by the local strays pack. Does not happen when her brother walks Bhairavi.

To my mind the only actionable option is stick/ spray. and the futile phone calls ofc

Very significant. Confident body language more important than carrying big stick?

Was giving this a thought over the past few days while keeping an eye on the dogs and their situations and conditions they live in. It is very easy to conclude that both the authorities as well as the animal lovers and organizations have failed too. Because it is in their interest to save these animals and improve their lives. It is not on me. The onus is on them. I am happy to see many of them go. They do nothing except save a few and think they have done something and the problem does not exist. The matter of the fact is that ten people saving a 100 dogs does nothing, there are tens of thousands out there. If you have epidemic, it is not enough 10 individuals do their thing, it either needs the entire community or the authorities to step in to counter it.

Much of what i have said in this thread is still how I think.
Please don't save humanity. The planet will thank you.

I take Calvin (gr) for walks. I don't carry a stick or rock. I know all the dogs in my locality. Only one of them charges at C. Some others bark and pose aggressively. A lot of them just watch keenly. C is an overly submissive dog. So, probably that helps. The way I deal with the aggressive dog is - stand between them and make sure C doesn't get bitten. It works for me.
