Craigslist for Used Gear?

Postby RNair » March 14th, 2008, 5:18 pm

I was wondering whether you guys ever check Craigslist for used bike gear. I use it quite a lot to pick up accessories at very reasonable prices. Ofcourse Ebay is an other option. the Craigslist under Washington DC is particularly popular since there are thousands of people riding bikes.

The biggest problem is with getting the stuff down once bought. Something are just not worth it to be shipped to India, while some others, it wont make sense. If you have friends who keep traveling and don't mind carrying down stuff, then it makes sense.
At the moment, for me buying in India has worked out best. May not be killer deals, but at least available.

Yup, CL has been wonderful - frames, parts, training partners.

Why pay full price when you can get someone's much-neglected garage queen? With the recent trend of converting old steel frames into fixies, some of the good deals last only a few hours - oh well. The best score yet - a $90 Jamis touring bike with Ortlieb panniers!

Used bike for $90 ?!?
$90 ~= INR3600/-. A new 27" wheeled, free wheel, chromoly bike, Hero Jet is around 2200/-.

Has anyone on this forum shipped bicycle from U.S.A?
(I know raknair)

1. How much would it cost?
2. Which is the economical freight?

Any restrictions, that need to be noted?

15% on complete bikes. You can disassemble it and avoid that. BTW, there are octrai charges(not sure of other states but for Karnataka) + cess.

I think it convenient to use CL only if someone you know is coming down from US or if you are looking for something specific besides Trek and Merida. Otherwise you are better off buying in India.

there are no octrai charges in Karnataka but present in Maharastra.

And Customs Duty must be 35% and not 15% for the full assembled bikes.

There ARE octrai charges in Karnataka. We were talking about CL so didn't mention that it is used bike and it is 15%. Just checked with DHL on 'all applicable charges'. (Visit DLH-india website, call them on their toll-free number and they will explain you all the details.)

Deepak: If you are so sure that octrai is not for Karnataka, I don't know have concrete validation other than DHL.

See I am into Electrical Switchgear Distribution and I get all my materials from Almost all over India. So I have not seen any octroi charges.

DHL has lots of expenses which they may be calling it as octroi charges.

U are right in customs duty part but if the customs fellow consider it as a sport goods then your in shock as the sports good atracts 17-40%.
