Boring non-enabling stuff sadly. Spare spokes, Power link, Performance rain jacket, Performance Ultra II bib--all for the trip. I finally found a tool for those infuriating chainring bolts that just go round and round and have only two notches at the back to hold them (the Iro has these).

Incidentally, the newer Ultra II bibs have a non-rubberised leg gripper and that works really well for me. I get a sweat rash on hot days with the rubberised one.

Oh, not cycling equipment, but cycling related since I wanted a decent camera that would fit in an HBB: I sold a couple of lenses on CL and used the proceeds to finally get into MicroFourThirds. The Panasonic Lumix GF2 with the 14mm pancake lens (28mm equivalent). "The best camera is the one you'll actually carry etc. etc." Seems nice, but it's hard to get too excited about what is effectively a downgrade. (Though given that my DLSR is a D70S, it might actually be an upgrade in terms of image quality!)

Can't a wide screw driver do that?

Congrats on the camera. Would love to see how it compares in low light to a DSLR.

Hmm, either I didn't have a wide enough one or it was chewing the bolt... can't remember now.

I don't actually like the GF series. I like the concept, but that camera could use lessons in ergonomics from the Fuji X10/X100 series. As it stands, that camera has too many menus & buttons for serious photography. Why can't they just put dials and direct access for the typical settings?

True. That ideal DSLR-substitute is simply not there - the Fuji X100 with interchangeable lenses would have been it.

that said, after the phuket trip, I am all for a water/drop-proof camera as a travel camera. Because sometimes, its about the road, not about the picture.

Anool,

REALLY good one there btw.

Seriously. It's so nice. The look and controls are exactly what I wanted. Being stuck with just a 35mm lens though... hmm.

The GF1 was promising, but they didn't go towards sensible with the GF2 or 3. It's really faffy--touch screen, all kinds of unneeded features, too few buttons... (In case anyone's wondering why I got it... it liked it better than the others at that level; I wanted the low profile and speed of the pancake primes; wanted no zoom but only two options: 28 or 24mm equivalent, and 50mm equivalent. Oh, and wanted it to cost less than the two lenses I sold.)

The best camera is the one you'll actually carry etc. etc.

Very true but I have some reservations.

Last year's cycling trip, I took a point and shoot, and had many more pics, including pics while riding. This year I took a DSLR, and had fewer, but better pics. Low light pics, pics in restaurants at dinner without flash etc. I can even take some pics while riding, but obviously not as many as a P&S from my jersey pocket. Better pics from an entry level DSLR and kit lens compared to a pretty mid level P&S.

I will take a DSLR over a P&S from what is currently available at least.

I'm guessing that Vandit is not going to be upset with a thread going all over the place? Just to say, this thingie the GF2 sits just a little above a regular P&S, just a little below an entry level DLSR. It's f2.5, which isn't too bad for a wide? (I know many zooms on P&S's are really fast these days though.) And the 50mm equivalent is f1.8. I don't have that lens just yet.

You control aperture from a knob... damn forgotten the name of that thing you spin, sits under the thumb? Push it once and then the spinning controls EV comp, which is good. I'd hate to go to a menu for that. The brilliant engineers at Panasonic took away the DOF preview button from the GF1, believe it or not!

Am taking it out on a hike this morning--will see how it works out. I think I'd want the EVF though, I don't like looking at a screen to shoot.

I hate looking at a screen to shoot, but an EVF comes pretty close to the hate level. You 'need' a regular viewfinder.

MC, I know exactly what you mean; its next to impossible to get them off with a screwdriver either. I considered getting an extra wide screwdriver and grinding out 3-4mm in the middle.
Finally, at the risk of ruining it, I used vernier calipers to unscrew my chain ring bolts.

True that place is evil. Lately I removed their plug in from my browser ;-) .

Got myself a LG equipe bibs from bonktown. Picked up another pair from Voler (they had a fire sale which I couldn't pass on, 40$ for Voler team bibs ) , a wind vest from Voler.
