Training on cycle indoors

Postby pdineshk » May 27th, 2008, 10:23 am

Sometimes training outdoors is an issue - rain, need to get up very early to beat sun & traffic, etc. Sticking to a schedule becomes a bit difficult because of this. So, what are the options available for training on a cycle indoors? What equipment/gadgets are available for this and where? I came across this article which throws some light: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/a ... ticleid=96 . Are these things available in India/Bengalooru? Any inputs would be great.

This needs to go into 'Training/Nutrition' I think? Abhi, help please.

Thanks for the reply. Some questions I had:

1. Which type of trainer to buy? The above article I'd linked to mentions three types - roller/magnetic/fluid. I would use it a lot - for interval training, and simulating uphill rides etc. Or does it matter at all what type of trainer it is?
2. What factors to consider while buying - wheel diameter of my bike is one. Are there any others?
3. Any suggestions on particular brand/model? Any suggestions on features to look for?

@RNair - one more question:

How does one control resistance during the training session - can one set distance/speed/time values at the beginning of the session - e.g., 1 km @ 20 kmph, 2 km @ 30 kmph etc...

I've been searching up some info on the net and liked trainers like Tracx T1680, Kurt Kinetic Pro Trainer, Cycleops Fluid2 etc. Only the Tracx seems to have any display/controls on the handle.

Thanks!

I do all kinds of intervals on my trainer. I ride on my trainer at least twice a week during off season and once during the peak. I own a Cycleops fluid trainer. More than sufficient for what I do as I still prefer to get my workouts outside. I ride out in sub zero temperatures in winter. The resistance can be adjusted by increasing the friction between the tyre and the roller. You can also use the gears. I usually adjust the resistance to the desired effort I need at most intense intervals before the workout. I also imitate climbing exercises by raising the height of the front wheel.

Trainers can get very expensive, I am not sure what budget you have. I use my Garmin Edge to get all the numbers and data from my indoor rides. So in case you are looking to spend a lot you are better off getting a basic trainer for less and instead spending that money on a very good cycle computer like Garmin Edge or IBike Power meter. You can use them indoors and outdoors.

Thanks a lot for the inputs. The suggestion on using a cycle computer makes sense. I already have the Garmin Edge 305 so probably get a Kurt Road Machine or Cycleops Fluid2. Of course, that decision is the easier part - how to buy a trainer in Bengalooru is the tough part :-)
