real glad to see the active threads/riders.

i have been riding to work for about 5 yrs now.
Prior to this i rode for a couple yrs 2.5 miles each way at a diff work location. this was 10 yrs ago & entire distance was through parks & along the lake.

Current ride to work-
distance 6.5 miles (each way)
atleast 4 days per week
ride to work is steady uphill all the way.
Can coast down (almost) all way home but for a steep climb for 0.8 miles b4 reaching door step.
when i ride my mtb or cruiser, 1/2 the distance is through parks/sidewalks
On my road bike - quick street ride (although i have to contend with motor vehicles)

different variations of the trip happen. when v need to go someplace directly from work, wife picks me up, i put bike on car roof rack or inside car & v go about our way. on bad weather days, i have taken bike on bus sometimes.
Ride on.

I've been off commuting for a while... but now I'm sick of taking my car everywhere.

So I've decided to not use the car for one week just to see how it goes. It'll be at around 50-55Km of riding everyday.

  • Route will be Warje(Home) - Aundh(Gym) - Hinjewadi(Office) in the morning and back to Warje in the evening.
  • Bike: Merida TFS 100
  • Medium term plan:
    • Lifestyle wise: shift closer to work, commute only by bike
    • Bike wise: A faster road bike (in the range of Trek 1.2/1.5)

I'll post my progress after a week.

Hi,

Been at it for a month now and do it all five days of the week.

My current ride is a Hero Thunder Racer.
My route is CV RAman Nagar to HAL Airport (the other side of the runway), abt 10.2km one way and I normally average about 20 to 21 km/h in the morning and abt 16-18 km/h on the way back (that evil called traffic!).
Mild ups and downs in the route but predominantly flat.
Image
Future plans - Reach average speed of at least 30km/h, graduate to a better road bike (Urbano, Trek 1.2 etc.) and try out a Konkan Coast Ride - Mangalore to Goa, perhaps or try my hand at TFN 2010!!
Regards,
Sridhar

Not only is commuting making me more active and healthy.. its saving a good deal on the fuel expenses. But when I put statistics to it, I figured out that my fuel usage from the time I started cycling has reduced by 80 %..! Which I think is awesome.. imagine if a good number of people could do the same..! :)

Hi,

Started Commuting from today. I was too glad to return in 40 mins amidst heavy traffic (My office bus takes 1 hour)

Bike - Hercules Atom

City - Bangalore

From - BTM Layout 2nd Stage (Near Vigneshwara Temple)

To - Cunningham Road (Accenture)

Distance - Around 21km Round Trip (Want to avoid main roads. Alternate routes will add around 5 kms to it)

Number of days in a month - Every Working Day (Thats the plan)

Climbs - No Major Climb.

Future plans - TFN'10

Apparel and Accessories: Right now Jeans - TShirt. Want to switch to cycling shorts. As i am the first cyclist in my office, am bit apprehensive about it.
Front and Back lights (Will be handy on the alternate routes at night)
Going to buy a helmet this Saturday. Thats high on my agenda.

Facilities in office: Was surprised to find a cycle stand in my office parking. Decent shower room ensures my team mates need not bring room freshener :)

Reaction at office: They were shocked when i bought a cycle. They literally laughed at me for spending 5k on it. I had hard time telling them about bikes costing up to 2 lacs and are available in Bangalore. But one of my team mate joined me and bought Schwinn Sporterra. Happy to have 2 more converts other than him, though, not in my team :D But today i got a fairly positive response from my team mates. Though they couldn't digest why i need lights.

Bike: Trek 3700
City: Pune
From: End of Aundh Rd.
To: Baner
Distance: 16k round trip.
Number of days a month: Everyday
Major Junctions: None
Climbs: None
Future Plans: Keep riding.
Apparel and Accessories: T, Jeans (Another T and Vest to change at the office)
Facilities in office: Nothing much.
Reaction at office: Well yesterday one girl shuddered looking at me helmet. May be the thought itself was repulsive enough.

My biking to office has created positive buzz around healthier lifestyle. We have an anti-smoking group with sloganized Ts and stuff. We did an impromptu team hike of a near by hill, 3 more people started commuting to work, There is a definite stretch goal of at least one team from this office for the next enduro3 (I don't even work for these guys!) and two other folks stopped and quizzed me on bike and biking. So definitely something better is happening. Let me once again thank @LT and @pranav for nudging me to commute on my bike.

Bike: Trek 4300
City: Blr
From: Sarjapur-ORR
To: Whitefield-Sap Labs
Distance: 23k round trip.
Number of days a month: targetted three days per week, probably average two over last couple of months, Mondays are recovery days & inevitably another day will be day for running errands, & throw in travel, etc, you get the point.
Major Junctions: Marathahalli
Climbs: Marathahalli-ORR overbridge & Marathahalli railway bridge on the way back
Future Plans: Monocycle to work, nah, just kidding.
Apparel and Accessories: Shorts & Ts
Facilities in office: Did someone forget this is India... change in the men's room
Reaction at office: mixed in my face reaction. Then, I give mixed in your face response. (like this one admin guy who snickered, I smiled back at his paunch).

Like Boni, I tried to encourage a few others. There's one other biker in my office, who lives a bit further away, while he doesn't commute, he encourages, so a positive vibe there. But the rest are rather content where they are and long time ago, I realised everyone to their own. I even offered my spare bike for them to try out, but no takers. No negative vibes, but reactions include concern about safety (traffic/late night commute, etc).

Distance: 16 Kms Round Trip.
Number of days - Daily
Apparel and Accessories: Dry Fit T's & Jean
Facilities in office: Rest Room (For Men) :D
Major Junction: Agara Circle
Reaction at office: Recieved Aah..!!! reaction from Colleagues but  reaction from manager. 2 guys inspired and took up cycling to work @tleast 2 days in a week. But my neighbour took this seriously & commutes to work (Dairy Circle) daily. Not to mention: he's happy..

Bike: Hero Hawk (Single speed)
City: Blr
From: BTM 2nd Stage
To: Sarjapur Wipro
Distance: 18-20 Kms Round Trip.
Number of days - 2 -3 a week = 8 -10 times a month
Apparel and Accessories: Dry Fit T's & Tracks
Facilities in office: Rest Room
Major Junction:Sarjapur Signal, Agara Circle, Silk Board Junction
Reaction at office: Well colleagues often ask me questions like:
1) How long does it take and How much distance? 2) How do you mange to travel in traffic? 3) How do you manage without getting tired 4) Does this reduce weight?
But after listening to the answers the reaction is more like  , :o , or
I guess people do undestand that this is really important from their health perspective as well and not th difficult as it sounds but something i guess (fear) keeps them inside thier 4 wheelers....and as Yoda would say
“Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”

Although must say that, i do enjoy the smiles on their face as childhood memories rush back wen they ride my bike.
And also my Boss, who always introduces me to new team members as an avid cyclists who rides to office.
Guess, a little publicity never harmed any one and in the end I am all smiles...in office

I work from home, so I cycle to work specifically to get more kilometers under my tires.

Distance: 9 km each way, so 18 km per day (Greater Kailash One to Moti Bagh / Satyaniketan)
City: New Delhi - how sad, it looks like I'm the only Delhi-ite in this thread :(
Bike: Trek 3700 mtb, soon to be changed to a Trek 1.5 roadie in under a month.
Number of days a month: Increasing every day. Last month it was about 5 days, this month hopefully it will be 10 to 15 days.
Major Junctions: AIIMS would be the biggest one, but I pass through a bunch of flyover intersections all the way to work.
Major climbs: Most of Delhi is flat as a pancake. The AIIMS flyover might count as a climb, but not to most of the hardcore nutters in here :P
Future plans: Once I get a new MacBook to work with, I plan to cycle almost every day. Of course in my case it's purely voluntary since most of my office works from home, but I plan to do it as a sort of minor training.

I have it good; my boss is very supportive of it and is working to making our office more 'green' with initiatives etc. But cycling to work is pretty much unheard of in Delhi it seems, aside from the usual security guards etc. With Delhi's traffic and pollution I'm hoping the govt here encourages businesses and corporations to allow / welcome / encourage cycling to work but who knows :/

Bike: Trek 4300
City: Thimphu, Bhutan
Distance: Only 4 km one way, so I ride back home for lunch. After work I take a detour of another 5 km or so. About 20km the whole day.
Number of days: 4 days a week mostly. I leave Mondays to recover from the longer weekend climbs.
Apparel and Accessories: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... ae/Gho.jpg. I am not kidding. Saturdays in jeans and a tee.
Facilities in office: None. Regular loo to wash up in.
Major Junction: Nothing major major, and most vehicles seem afraid of hitting a cyclist. Except the huge trucks.
Major Climbs: Every road is either a climb or a drop here, so well...
Reaction at office: They're all quite appreciative and encouraging. No converts or anything though.
Future plans: HTFU
