Act 110 - basket / some other accessory for a heavy laptop

Postby Alterlife » June 14th, 2012, 12:52 am

I'm very new to bicycle commuting. I have a very short trip of 4 km.

My laptop backpack is very heavy and I feel it's causing back pain. Is there any accessory available for the act110 (possibly a basket or attachable bag) that I can order to hold a fairly heavy 15 inch laptop.

rack, a nice padded waterproof pannier on rack type solution ?

sthg like this

if the ACT does not have eyelets P clips FTW and your rack is on

the other end solution (both ways :) ) would be a wire basket in the front I guess.

The first thing to try would be adjust the straps on the backpack and see if you can make it more comfortable for your commute.

Take your pick from here - http://www.decathlon.in/cycling-rear-racks-and-bags

I prefer leaving my laptop at office when I intend to ride down the next day. I pick it up only when I come by my car :)

Not all of us have that luxury of leaving the laptop at office.
if i had that luxury, there would not have been a laptop for me in the first place.
anyway i have ordered this for the purpose along with the handlebar attachment and pannier attachment.

damn. the prices have come down by 20$ since i ordered this. i feel i have been robbed.

not sure whether this would go with act 110 though.
there was also a mention of some thai made panniers being sold at BOTS.

Problem with carrying a back pack is not just about weight distribution. It blocks ventilation to back also which become quite an irritation in hot weather. So, even on a 4km ride backpack will block perspiration from back.
My office commute is 8Km one way. I faced the same problem in May, not about weight distribution though. Took the cycle to LBS which stocks a variety of parts, that guy was patient enough to excavate through his inventory to find a rack that fits act110.
That rack attaches to seat post on top and rear wheel axle at bottom. Act110 has eyelets on chain stay dropouts but I preferred to attach the rack support rods to axle.
I tie my backpack to rack using bungee cords.
That rack costs about 500, but worth every paise of it. Not too heavy either.
Will post a pic tommorrow.

While waiting for the knog bag to reach me, I made this heavily padded, velcro mounted frame bag to avoid carrying the laptop on my back.

Edit : Model : Lord Venky ;)

That said, you don't really need any special stuff to ride 4 km really. If I had a 4km commute, I would probably walk with that laptop on my back :)

I won't quite agree with that. Some of these old laptops can be really heavy and prove to be a hazard to neck/shoulder muscles if lugged around for long. My commute is only 6 kms one way but still I prefer to avoid riding with laptop on my back.

ventilation to the back is always a problem irrespective of the weight of the laptop.
if weight distribution is a problem search BZ for some weight re-distribution techniques. sure you would find some.
the idea that Endurance gave seems to be a practical and do-able thing for you since its for a 110 and involves only a LBS.

I love the 'velcro mounted frame bag' by shankarbn... but my laptop is too big fit into that gap for sure.

I guess the simplest option is to see if I can find a bike store in whitefield and buy whatever they have.
